I chose the stlye of intimate portrait for these photos because I felt it revealed more about the person than the frontal portrait would have in this particular case.

I saw an article on a retrospective look at the Happenings Art movement of the 60's at the Pace Gallery on 23rd in Chelsea in NYC this past Saturday.

I was trying to document the reactions of today's audances to the Happening events. Audances at the time did not realize what was happening before, during and sometimes after the event as noted by Allen Kaprow who was one of the leading artists of that movement. So my responce to the article was to attend the exhibit and photograph the reactions of people attending.

Morover, the image should have an artistic aesthetic rather than a photo journalistic one. Or at lest, an "artsy" photo journalistic sense. Ideally, the photo to have a greater meaning than simply documenting people attending like Winograd's photo that also appeared in the paper that day as well. Photojournalistic images can be contrived and do not need to do anything beyond showing what was happening. Where Winograd's photos have often odd compositions or they in some way direct the viewer to see things they might have missed had they been there.

Of course, the problem is that this demends that something actually happens in front of you when which can't be counted on. So, I shot the photojournalistic shots looking out for something that might be more than descriptive which I believe happened in the photo of two people entering Robert Whitman's "Inside Out" work presented with other more photojournalist works.
